Interior Design Pitfalls

Designing interiors can be a thrilling journey of creativity and self-expression. However, amidst the excitement, there are certain pitfalls that even the most seasoned designers should be cautious of. Here are four things you definitely shouldn't do when crafting the perfect interior space:

1. Overcrowding the Space: Imagine walking into a room that's bursting at the seams with furniture, decor, and accessories. While it might seem tempting to showcase every beautiful piece you own, overcrowding can create a cluttered and chaotic atmosphere. It's important to maintain a sense of balance and proportion in your design. Give each element room to breathe, allowing for a harmonious and visually pleasing environment. Remember, sometimes less is truly more.

2. Ignoring Functionality: A stunning interior that neglects functionality is like a masterpiece without purpose. It's crucial to prioritize the intended use of a space. For instance, placing delicate and expensive furniture in a high-traffic area or forgetting to consider storage solutions can lead to frustration and disappointment down the line. Design should enhance the way people live and interact within a space, making functionality a key aspect of any successful interior.

3. Neglecting Lighting: Lighting can make or break the ambiance of a room. Disregarding proper lighting design can leave your interior feeling dull and uninspiring. Natural light creates a connection to the outside world, while a combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting sets the mood and highlights architectural features. Instead of relying solely on overhead lights, explore the magic of layering different light sources to add depth and drama to your interior.

4. Disregarding Personal Touch: While following design trends can be fun, remember that your interior should reflect your personality and unique style. Avoid the trap of creating a space that feels like a showroom rather than a lived-in home. Incorporate elements that hold personal meaning, whether it's family heirlooms, travel souvenirs, or artwork you've created. Infusing your space with your personal story can transform it into a sanctuary that's not only visually appealing but emotionally resonant.

In the world of interior design, avoiding these pitfalls is just as important as embracing creative ideas. By steering clear of overcrowding, prioritizing functionality, paying attention to lighting, and adding your personal touch, you'll be well on your way to crafting interiors that are both captivating and purposeful.

So, I mostly pass by this particular building along Salvation road at Opebi in Ikeja. Most times I am always rushing to catch up with one meeting or one appointment or another.
